Substance Misuse

Staying Safe

The best way to stay HEALTHY and SAFE is not to use substances at all. But if you’re thinking of using, answer these questions first:

Where are you?

Is the place you are using safe? – Taking substances affects your ability to do things safely, so don’t drive.

Who are you with?

Do you trust the people you are with to look after you if things get rough?

Do you know the effects of the substance you are planning to take?

What does it do to your body? How will it make you feel? Will you be in control? Substances make you more likely to do things you’ll regret later, like having unsafe sex.

How are you feeling?

Do you feel happy, sad, down, angry or worried? Substances can make feeling more intense. You could start off feeling a little worried but end up totally freaked-out.

Are you mixing substances?

Don’t do it! Mixing can be really dangerous.

Do you know what to do in an emergency?

If your friend collapses, do you know what to do? You could save a life if you know the recovery position. Call an ambulance. Tell them what your friend’s taken.
